RE: Notable/Celebrity Deaths | Akira Toriyama (68) - Moonface - Mar 8th, 2024

Oda Eiichiro wrote this statement in response to the news of Toriyama's passing:

Oda Eiichiro Wrote:
It is too early.
The hole is too big. Sadness washes over me when I think that I will never see him again.

I have admired him so much since I was a child, so I remember the day he called me by name for the first time. On the way home from the day you used the word "friend" for me and Kishimoto, I remember being overjoyed with Kishimoto. I also remember the last conversation we had.

I was one of those who took the baton from the days when reading manga made you a fool, and he also created an era when both adults and children could enjoy reading manga. He showed us the dream that manga can go worldwide. It was like watching a hero going forward.

For not only mangakas but also creators in various industries, the excitement and emotion of the time of Dragon Ball serialization must have taken root in their childhood.
His existence is like a big tree.

For the manga artists of our generation who stood on the same stage, Toriyama's works became more and more important to me as I got closer to the same stage. I even felt being scary. But I am just happy to see the aloof man himself again. Because we love him on a blood level.

With respect and gratitude for the creative world he has left behind. I pray for his soulful rest in peace.

May heaven be the joyous world he envisioned.

Oof another big name gone, yeesh what a way to go too. I hope it wasn't painful too but he has left behind a legacy mere mortals dream for. RIP. o7

RE: Notable/Celebrity Deaths | Akira Toriyama (68) - Moonface - Mar 11th, 2024

I was curious how it would be to suffer from what Toriyama succumbed to, and according to the NHS a subdural haematoma occurs from some form of head trauma. As for symptoms, a lot are what you'd expect for any form of head injury and can get confused with dementia or stroke until tests are run to determine the cause.

It's gonna really suck if Toriyama's passing was due to a recent head injury that wasn't checked out by a medical professional. Based on what I've read it sounds like if this gets caught you won't die from it. Errm

Mutsumi Inomata (63), "Tales of" series character designer, has passed away
I don't know how many people here know of her by name or even know of her at all as the one behind them, but because I'm sure folks are at least aware of the watercolor artwork for the "Tales of" series I figured I'd share that the character designer and artist for multiple "Tales of" games, Mutsumi Inomata, has passed away at the age of 63. She worked on the following games:
  • Tales of Destiny
  • Tales of Destiny 2
  • Tales of Eternia
  • Tales of Rebirth
  • Tales of the Tempest
  • Tales of Innocence
  • Tales of Hearts
  • Tales of Graces
  • Tales of Xillia
  • Tales of Xillia 2
  • Tales of Zestiria
  • Tales of Berseria
  • Tales of Crestoria

Necroing the thread to report that Shelly Duvall died yesterday in her sleep at the age of 75. The cause of death was complications from diabetes. Shelly Duvall is probably most famous for her portrayal of Wendy Torrance in Kubrick's version of The Shining, a movie that is infamous for the production trials due to Stanley Kubrick's perfectionism.

RE: Notable/Celebrity Deaths | Shelly Duvall (75) - ShiraNoMai - Jul 13th, 2024

Yeah I saw; she was such a sweet person until the end. I saw a post about her birthday being celebrated (which is the day before, poignantly) so she had a moment of happiness before passing.

RE: Notable/Celebrity Deaths | Shelly Duvall (75) - Moonface - Jul 13th, 2024

I was surprised to learn that The Shining is really the only notable film she was in, considering how memorable her role is in that movie and how big the movie is. It made me wonder whether she was just a one hit wonder type of actress or if her career after that movie was just greatly affected by what she endured for the filming of The Shining. She had also made a return to acting after almost two decades of inactivity but only had a role in one movie before her passing, and I wonder if she had done more if she may have seen a comeback similar to that of Brendan Fraser.

RE: Notable/Celebrity Deaths | Shelly Duvall (75) - Maniakkid25 - Jul 14th, 2024

And so quickly after Shelly Duvall, I report that Richard Simmons has also died the day after his 76th birthday, his birthday being Friday, July 12th. His cause of death is not officially known at this time, though it appears unrelated to his skin cancer diagnosis announced a few months prior. For those that don't know, Richard Simmons was a health guru who famously mixed together comedic energy with his workout routines. While recently he had been relatively reclusive, by all accounts he was a wonderful human being who only wanted the world to be healthier, and he will be missed.

RE: Notable/Celebrity Deaths | Shelly Duvall (75) - queenzelda - Jul 14th, 2024

It's sad both Shelly and Richard passed so suddenly. I actually saw Shelly in Popeye as Olive Oyl and she was really good. I also grew up with Richard Simmons when he was popular and loved his energy. It's so sad to see them both are gone now. May they rest in peace.

RE: Notable/Celebrity Deaths | Shelly Duvall, 75; Richard Simmons, 76 - Moonface - Jul 18th, 2024

I feel like I recognize Richard Simmons from somewhere, but I know I never watched any fitness programs of sorts nor can I recall them being advertised. *goes to look up a thing*
Ah, so his fitness show was played in a scene in Space Jam; that's where I recognize him from. I'm shocked he was only 76 because with how old that movie is and how the video of him looks old, I thought he would've been older by now if not passed away already. o.o

Rachael Lillis (46), English VA for Pokémon's Misty and Jessie, has passed away
News has just broke that voice actress Rachael Lillis passed away on August 10 at the age of 46 after battling cancer. She was diagnosed with breast cancer in May 2024.

RE: Notable/Celebrity Deaths | Shelly Duvall, 75; Richard Simmons, 76 - Mr EliteL - Aug 13th, 2024

Damn, 46. Such a terrible loss too early. Do have fond memories though of her as Misty and Jessie.

Darn and here I am without any of my vcr/dvds of the ones I used to own as I got rid of them. Doh

RE: Notable/Celebrity Deaths | Rachael Lillis (46) - Moonface - Aug 13th, 2024

It's crazy to learn she was the VA for the characters since 1998 which would have made her what, 20 or so? Imagine getting multiple VA roles in something that would run for so long and become such a huge thing at such a young age. Shock

I don't know if Team Rocket show up anymore since the anime actually concluded Ash's journey, but I'm glad she got to be around for the finale of that journey since Misty did re-appear in that final episode of Ash's. It's nice she got to see off the characters she brought to life. ^_^

RE: Notable/Celebrity Deaths | Rachael Lillis (46) - Moonface - Aug 20th, 2024

So Rachael Lillis was mistakenly thought to be 46 when she passed, but she was actually 55.

Unfortunately, that's not all I came to this thread to say. I just saw that Atsuko Tanaka (voice actress for Bayonetta, Kaine from Nier, Motoko Kusanagi from Ghost in the Shell and Caster/Medea from Fate) has passed away at the age of 61. Sad

RE: Notable/Celebrity Deaths | Rachael Lillis (46) - ShiraNoMai - Aug 21st, 2024

I saw; horrible loss. More voice acting legends making their way across the rainbow bridge, narrating our lives and laughing up in the clouds...
