That gameplay footage alone makes this a day one buy and a guarantee for shooter of the year when it comes out.
I love that the level design is more open this time around and less linear in how you explore it. I also wonder if invasions will replace the multiplayer mode of the last Doom game since it wasn't really that popular.

RE: Doom (Series) | Doom Eternal Announced - Mr EliteL - Aug 13th, 2018

What was the multiplayer in Doom (2016) even? Completely forgot there was any.

Gameplay looked cool, did like the hook shot adding more to movement, and that the areas seem more open too. Sounds good to hear you can team up with whoever 'invades' your campaign. Not so much fight them.

Pretty much what any game involving guns would have, deathmatch, maybe some capture based mode, etc. I know you could get a powerup to turn into a demon in the multiplayer which was one of the shining points of it so I expect that's why the invasion mechanic has come about.

RE: Doom (Series) | Doom Eternal Announced - Moonface - Sep 14th, 2018

Not sure if this is new or something that got mentioned before now, but Doom Eternal has a 1UP pickup that essentially revives you where you die instead of sending you back to the last checkpoint:

I wonder if it'll be available on all difficulties or just the easier ones. Also, will it revive you on the last platform you were on if you die from falling into a pit? Hmm

RE: Doom (Series) | Doom Eternal Announced - Mr EliteL - Sep 15th, 2018

At first thought it was going to be another kind of checkpoint from where pick the 1UP from, but that wouldn't be as good as reviving around where you just died. Perhaps harder difficulties they'll be rarer, and none on the hardest difficulty I'd imagine? I know there tends to be quite a few difficulties (5 in Doom 2016). If judging by that, perhaps same amount for the two easy skill levels (or same as Normal), average amount in Normal, less in Hard, even less or none in nightmare.

Played Doom VFR last week for the first time with my Aim Controller. I like it better than Doom 2016, a lot better, but from what I’ve read it’s a lot shorter.

Being in the Doom Universe yourself is the ultimate goal they were trying to achieve with the original. The whole point of first person is immersion and in VR you are in the game.

RE: Doom (Series) | Eternal Trailer, Gameplay, and Release Date - Moonface - Jul 26th, 2019

I don't know when exactly Bethesda revealed this, but the artwork for the steel book edition for Doom Eternal is fucking insane:

RE: Doom (Series) - ShiraNoMai - Jul 27th, 2019

That is actually sick af. I would totally get that steelbook edition Wow

This game, from what I've been hearing, is turning out to be quite amazing and that has me very excited to see it through to release Grin

Doom Eternal Delayed Until March 2020
Doom Eternal has been delayed until March 20, 2020 for all announced platforms except Nintendo Switch. The Nintendo Switch version was not included with this date, and is presumably coming at a later time.

Bethesda Wrote:
Throughout the development of DOOM Eternal, our goal has been to deliver a game that exceeds your greatest expectations across the board.

To make sure we’re delivering the best experience — for DOOM Eternal to live up to our standards of speed and polish — we’ve made the decision to extend our launch date by a few months to March 20, 2020.  We know many fans will be disappointed by this delay, but we are confident that DOOM Eternal will deliver a gaming experience that is worth the wait.

In addition to shifting the DOOM Eternal launch date, we’ve made a couple other changes we wanted you to know about:
  • Invasion Mode, which will allow you to enter another player’s game as a playable demon, will release as a free update shortly after launch.
  • DOOM Eternal for Nintendo Switch will release after the other platforms. We will announce that date in the future.
  • DOOM 64 will be available on Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC in addition to Nintendo Switch. We are adding DOOM 64 as a pre-order bonus for DOOM Eternal on all platforms so you’ll be able to download and play this classic game, for free, just for pre-ordering DOOM Eternal. DOOM 64 will be released on March 20, 2020 on all platforms.
We are grateful to every DOOM fan for your dedication and support – we can’t wait to rip-and-tear right alongside you.

RE: Doom (Series) | Eternal Delayed to 2020 - Moonface - Jan 14th, 2020

A new trailer was released today for Doom Eternal. It looks so good! Grin

RE: Doom (Series) - WR91 - Oct 1st, 2020

2016 DOOM was pretty good. It kind of made me think of Halo in a strange way. Seeing as I don't own a XB1 to play the current Halo games on a regular basis.

I'm going to wait for Eternal to get a 20 dollar cheap sale or something.

Doom: The Dark Ages | Announcement Trailer - Moonface - Jun 9th, 2024

Doom: The Dark Ages | Announcement Trailer
A new Doom game was announced during today's Xbox Games Showcase presentation. It will arrive in 2025 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S and PC.

Oh man I'm so excited for this one! I wasn't sure how a medieval style Doom was going to work but this trailer easily convinced me. Grin

Doom: The Dark Ages | Quakecon 2024 Showcase Leaks
During Quakecon 2024 there was a private gameplay showcase of Doom: The Dark Ages. Recording was obviously not allowed, nor was writing down details during the presentation, but some who did attend have shared what they can recall from memory. Because the footage was only played once, there is a chance details may be lacking in areas or full accuracy. Anything that wasn't already revealed in the initial trailer or isn't a minor detail has been hidden for those wanting to avoid spoilers, and I've done my best to mark what is hidden behind most of the hidden text so anyone wanting to reveal it can choose what parts they do or do not want to see.
  • It was a pre-recorded video narrated by Hugo Martin, the studio's creative director.
  • This was an alpha version of the game, mixing scenes with snippets of raw gameplay.
  • The snippets shown were like extensions of the sequences shown in the announcement trailer.
  • It was made clear that the game areas are much more open than in previous games.

  • *SPOILER* Melee Weapons: It was confirmed that there will be 3 melee weapons: a flail that allows you to collect ammunition, a mace and a fist that creates chains of electricity between enemies.

  • The saw shield allows you to transverse the map, but it can also be thrown against enemies and be recovered while it tears their flesh.
  • Green projectiles can be reflected back at enemies.
  • Verticality no longer plays an important role in the game. When the Doom Slayer jumps, it's similar to the mechanics of the power armor in Fallout 4 or Fallout 76.

  • *SPOILER* Glory Kills: The Glory Kill system has been completely reinvented. These are no longer programmed eliminations depending on the angle of attack. Now a small purple halo appears on the enemy, signifying that the player can execute it. Glory kills seem to be based on kicks and punches or any melee weapon, depending on the player's choice.

  • *SPOILER* Weapons: A new weapon has been shown, a type of double-barrel plasma gun. It's reminiscent of the plasma gun from the first DOOM, but with two barrels connected by a piece of metal. Both cannons fire at the same time. Another weapon was revealed, a single-barrel shotgun.

  • The nail gun shown in the first trailer, as well as the other weapons, interact perfectly with all the game's mechanics. For example, a wall was shown on which several enemies were nailed.

  • The Dragon and Altan (the big mech) can be played several times in the campaign.
  • Altan fights with his fists and a double cannon. He also has his own HUD. When he takes damage, pieces of his armor break off.
  • Altan can perform glory kills.

  • *SPOILER* Enemies: Never-before-seen enemies have been shown, while the existing ones have undergone some modifications: One of the new enemies is a strange octobrain that fired blue projectiles, and a new one is a big quadlegged cyberdemon. Arachnotrons are now more fleshy.

  • The HUD is reminiscent of DOOM Eternal.
  • The environmental narrative seems to play an important role in the game.

Since the footage is alpha I guess it'll be some time before we see the footage released publicly so that it can be refined further. Based on this info though, I'm fine with the jump being nerfed into the ground because I didn't really care much for the platforming in 2016 or Eternal, although it'll probably feel weird to me at first since those are the only Doom games I've played.

I'm glad that melee has been expanded; it was always odd to me that Doom Guy is an absolute unit of a man but punching demons was reserved for having a power-up or doing a Glory Kill. Punching stuff otherwise was always just rather weak and while I don't expect him to just Falcon Punch demons I think it makes sense to at least put more focus onto melee than the last few games had.
