Favourite/Preferred Sub-Genres? - Moonface - Sep 4th, 2023

Trying to fit games into genres nowadays tends to be quite tough when a lot of games have elements that cover multiple genres (such as action-adventure games adopting RPG elements within them or shooters falling into action/horror/etc.) but generally sub-genres tend to be a little bit more distinct, such as the following:
  • RPG - Action RPG / Turn-Based RPG / MMORPG / JRPG / Rogues / Sandbox
  • RacingĀ  - Kart / Arcade / Simulation
  • Platformers/Fighting/etc. - 2D / 3D
  • Shooters - First Person / Third Person / Light-Gun / Looter Shooter
  • Strategy - Real-time Strategy / Turn-based Strategy / Real-time Tactics / Turn-based Tactics / Tower Defense / MOBA
Not a definitive list by any means, but just wanted to try and give an idea. Sigh

So yeah, I was curious what everyone's preferred or favourite sub-genres are since while it's kinda easy to say I like platformers, there might be a type of platformer I like more than others or find I own more games of without maybe realizing I do.

I know for racing games I vastly prefer arcade and kart racers over anything aimed at simulation because I usually find racing simulators lose my interest really quickly. I'm sure they're great for people who want to live out a fantasy of being a Formula 1 driver or something but they're not for me.

Action RPG is my most preferred sub-genre, then Tactical RPG which could also fall under Strategy, plus I like Turn-Based RPGs that are commonly used too. I don't have as many games as an RPG enthusiast I'd imagine would have though so I haven't got a wide scope to choose from with Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga being my first game into RPGs.

For Shooter I rarely, well not at all play shooters anymore but preferred Third-Person over First-Person. Also goes for other games that may use that type of camera for controlling the playable character, I still prefer Third over First.

Platformers I prefer 2D over 3D mainly because 2D was what I was first enjoyed really.

Fighting 3D I prefer over 2D but it's very close. Tekken started as 2D anyway, BlazBlue helped teach me how to do more complicated moves for both 2D and 3D. Since Tekken is my main fighting game series though, 3D edges out.

Racing just Kart really, maybe Arcade but haven't played an Arcade racer in so quite a long while. Simulation I did play with my brother which wasn't bad really but the Kart sub-genre is just so much more fun.

Hmm, I'm actually torn on this one. The number of platformers I've played is far higher for 3D ones than 2D, but the movement generally feels better in 2D than 3D, likely because less directions are involved so it feels like there's more control.

This one is pretty close for me too, but that's because I've only really played Tekken and Smash. That said I prefer 3D Tekken games over the 2D ones so I'd probably go with your stance of 3D preference but 2D being very close behind it.
