Your Palatable Console/PC Price? - Moonface - Oct 15th, 2024

Really struggled with what to name this one. XD
Anyway, with today's announcement of the PS5 Pro and its accompanying $700 price tag, it's not surprising to see a majority of comments saying that $700 is too steep of an asking price, whether it be for what the PS5 Pro offers or because that price is just too high for a gaming console. I myself didn't care to get a PS5 Pro no matter what the price, but if I had been considering one the $700 price would definitely turn me off.

So I'm curious what everyone else's limit is for what they would spend on a console or PC? Does your limit change depending on what's being offered to you, and do you have an absolute upper limit you won't spend more than regardless of what the console/PC offers?

For me I don't know what my absolute limit is, but I know anything over $500 for a console is very likely to make me really think about if I want to purchase it or not. For PC's, I know to get something suitable for what I want to do is going to cost me over $1000, but I probably wouldn't look for anything over $2000 unless none of the options available to me are less than that so I'm left with no choice.

Today :modCheck:

PCs I would never top $2000 as well; preferably I get the $2000 value at a lower price.

Consoles? This one's tough cuz most of my spendature really was limited to either Nintendo or post-launch price drops. Consoles I've gotten at launch were generously gifted to me as a child by my parents so it's hard to conceive of how I'd react to prices at the time I didn't have monetary means.
The shift for consoles to go from hyper-specific hardware for the function of the available game technical abilities, to just essentially a miniature PC, is really what makes this hard. PCs have the advantage of at least being more than just a video game platform, so their intrinsic value escalates. For the simple functionality as a games platform, $500 also appears to be my reasonable limit.

Thought there was a topic like this already but those were for online subscription prices and game/launch game prices.

Gaming PCs I've already went over my preferred limit of 2k, so I don't particularly want to do that again, definitely not anytime soon.

Consoles, I already can't remember how much I paid for my PS5, but it was before there was a price increase (I thought there was one anyway), and the Pro price is too much already. I'm dreading what their asking price will be for next gen consoles, £500 was in the steep range before PS5 and now it looks to be going beyond that, so might have to bump my limit up, unless it's a Nintendo console of course, though I still don't want to and keep it between £400-£500.

This thread was made back when the PS5 Pro was announced but I remade it because I had the impression it had slipped under the radar for everyone.

See above. Tongue

Also @Mr EliteL there was a price increase to the PS5 but I forget when. Pretty ridiculous to think the Slim never saw a price drop to the original PS5 price now that I'm reminded that the price went up since launch.

Idk since Sony and Xbox seem to want to go digital I'd rather go pc. Yes I'm missing the next ff7 remaster install but I can wait for a pc release. The only console I see worth getting is what ever the Nintendo inch is aka the next Nintendo console. Since I play a lot of zelda, metroid, Mario, some yoshi, and Pokémon.

If Sony ever does go 100% digital that would lower my palatable console price significantly, considering how rarely there are good sales on digital console games. Errm

I mean the Xbox has basically gone digital already. Eventually the PS5 will too. More people tend to buy digital media anymore over physical. I buy physical media where I can, but it's hard to when the game your looking for is no where to be found most time.

But any who, I plan to buy the next Nintendo console & we've already invested in a new pc for our living room since the one we had was 5 years old or more. I already have a new laptop which I love. I have been debating getting a steam deck but I really hated the Switch lite since I enjoy seeing the games on tv more. I wish some place had a demo I could try out. (sigh)

For Xbox it makes sense given their strategy has moved away from shifting hardware to just software, and when they want their games on as many devices as possible it becomes easier to not worry about having a physical medium that isn't usable on anything that isn't an Xbox. PlayStation aren't going to try that same approach, and I'd expect them to move to digital consoles with an attachable disc drive for the next generation rather than moving entirely to digital only.

I may be wrong but I'm pretty sure the Steam Deck offers a way to connect it to a TV like a Switch can. I think it's with a dock but I don't know off-hand if it's official or third party.

RE: Your Palatable Console/PC Price? - queenzelda - Dec 2nd, 2024

Yea, the problem I have with a steam deck is I'd plug that puppy into a tv and not take it anywhere if it's just too big to fit into my purse as I tend to do with my usual Switch.

I'll try going to Best Buy and see if they have a steam deck available for demo. I'll do research on how it hooks up to the tv. I might even buy myself a steam deck backpack so I can take it anywhere I wanna take it with me. A big purse I feel might seem like an easy target for thieves, personally.

RE: Your Palatable Console/PC Price? - Moonface - Dec 20th, 2024

I recall using a Steam Deck once but I can't remember how big it felt compared to a Switch. Here's the size comparison via Wikipedia though:

Steam DeckSwitchSwitch Lite
11.7 in9.5 in8.2 in
4.6 in4.0 in3.6 in
1.9 in0.55 in0.55 in
669g (LCD) / 640g (OLED)398g277g

The Deck is also about 200g heavier than a Switch is too, so transporting one is going to be tougher overall in comparison.

RE: Your Palatable Console/PC Price? - Maniakkid25 - Dec 20th, 2024

Immediately on looking at those comparisons, I thought those comparsions are biased against the Steam Deck. Because that, to me, looks like the Switch's dimensions don't include the removable Joy-Cons. Looking into it, I was right, but the Switch is still considerably smaller at around 9.4 inches. But either way, you basically have a system that is 2 CDs wide (CDs are commonly in 12 cm in diameter, which is closing in on 5 inches) that you're playing with. Lugging that around is not going to be easy in either case.

RE: Your Palatable Console/PC Price? - queenzelda - Dec 21st, 2024

Yea, which is why I was considering getting a backpack for it since placing it inside a purse would probably inadvisable since it's larger and heavier than the Switch lite is. I'll look around at prices during the holidays to see if I can find something for sale I would like and go from there. If I get something, I'll post about it. :3

Ah, my mistake. I didn't realize Wikipedia shows the dimensions without the Joy-Cons attached by default and that the attached specs were hidden in a drop-down on the same page. Sweat

Oof, yeah if you're normally carrying around a Lite then it'll be an even bigger difference than what I posted, because I thought you were taking around a regular Switch so those were the specs I was using.

RE: Your Palatable Console/PC Price? - ShiraNoMai - Dec 22nd, 2024

Yeah I will say that the LCD and I think just recently the new OLED models started going on sale. The Black Friday sales went down to 25% off MSRP, so it's definitely worth looking at for that.

But yeah, I mean a lot of people also perma-dock their Switches, so if you consider perma-docking, it's not the worst idea. It's significantly cheaper than any PC at those specs could offer, plus an easy way to hardwire to your TV
