I feel like calling these gimmick controls might be the wrong term, but I can't think of what else it would be called.

Anyway, after making a post last night talking about the inclusion of mouse controls in the new Star Fox game, I woke up today thinking about other games that have used a gimmick of a controller in some way and which ones did it well and which did it poorly.

Funnily enough, the first game that comes to my mind for this is Rayman Raving Rabbids. Originally it was made for the Wii and heavily utilized its motion controller gimmick, and while I haven't played that version to comment on if it was good or bad, what I did play was the PS2 port of the game. If you somehow don't know, the PS2 doesn't have motion controls, nor did Xbox 360 or PC, the other platforms the game was ported to. This meant that any minigame which used motion controls had to be changed to now use either button inputs or the analogue sticks, and for the most part it was actually okay, except for the very first minigame which still lives in my head rent free to this day.

That page claims the PS2 version uses the L2 and R2 buttons. I call bullshit because I know for a fact when I played that level it required moving the analogue sticks up and down in alternating fashion (so move one up and one down, then reverse) as quickly as you can, and it was absolutely awful. It was impossible for me to sync moving both sticks in alternate directions as fast as possible so Rayman would just struggle to move at all, and the only way I managed to beat this level was to ask my dad to take control of one stick, I took the other, and we both just wiggled them up and down as fast as we could with no care for timing and it managed to work. If there was an option to use L2 and R2 I wish I had known about it, because fuck me what an example of how horrible gimmick controls can be for a game when porting it to platforms without the same gimmicks. x.x

To give one that always feels this way to me, there's a regular enemy encounter in Slay the Spire 2 in Act 3 called the Fabricator that to me feels like it could easily qualify as an Elite fight instead. This enemy can summon up to four minions, each with 19-24 HP and either attack, give block to the main enemy, or put status cards into your deck. The main enemy has 150 HP so you aren't going to kill him before he summons help, and once he does it means you're unlikely to attack anything without taking damage from a lack of block because you'll be taking a total of 48 attack damage unless you kill one of the two attacking minions, which will probably just be summoned back after the next turn. The fight only ends by killing the Fabricator itself, but if you focus on him his minions will give you trouble and one of them provides him with block that means your attacks are less effective, and if you focus on the minions he'll just replace the one or two you kill. I've gone into this fight so many times with full HP and had my arse absolutely mauled even with a decent deck. There was a fight in Slay the Spire 1 that was similar to this except that was actually an Elite fight so you expect to be in for a tough fight. x.x

Individual Wages or Shared Wages?

So I've worked for two different grocery stores in my life, one in England and one in the US, and one key difference between them (which may or may not be culturally related) is how they handle wages.

Individual Wages
I would assume this is how most businesses work regardless of country, which is where every employee is paid a different wage based upon their position, performance, skills, tenure, or a mixture of those things. The store I work at now in the US works this way, and my hourly wage can go up by 25 cents to $1 whenever I have an evaluation depending on how my evaluation actually goes. I'm sure there's a chance an evaluation can result in no raise (not counting being at the pay cap, which means you're already being paid the maximum hourly rate available), but that's going to be from a poor evaluation that will generally be your own fault.

I don't think your hourly wage can be decreased though through an evaluation, which does mean once you hit the pay cap there's not much reason to aim for an outstanding evaluation unless you're trying to move up the ladder or you're a part timer who doesn't want to risk losing hours. If you're full time and don't intend to move up though, you could just do enough to not get torn a new one and not put your job/position at risk because doing extra isn't going to potentially get you a higher raise.

In simple terms for anyone not aware of this structure, everyone in the job will be getting paid differently per hour even if they all share the same position based on various factors and personal performance, and if you aren't seeking anything beyond your current position then evaluations matter a lot less when you can no longer get a raise from them.

Shared Wages
This is how my job in England was, and it probably still runs on this format but @Mr EliteL can confirm that for me since he still works at that same job I was at. So how it worked was everybody in the store who wasn't a team leader or a manager got paid the same hourly wage, regardless of performance, tenure, or almost anything else. There were people at that store who had been there for 20+ years when I started, and I made the exact same hourly wage they did. Raises were once a year, and it was the company as a whole deciding what to increase the hourly rate to, but I have no clue what it was based on. I assume company performance and what rate competing stores were offering were at least some factors in the choice.

If you were paid more than the standard hourly wage, it was done as an addon wage. So for example, bakers got £1 an hour extra because they were bakers, and I think anyone trained to be a first aid responder also got extra. Technically bakers are making a higher wage, but because it was tied to the role and not the person it meant if you stopped being a baker and did say, cashiering, you can't try to keep the higher wage nor could you try to argue being paid that higher wage if you were a baker covering another department, since you aren't in that moment working as a baker.

Now the other big difference with this job was it didn't do full time or part time positions for any non-leadership positions. (If you're full time in the US, it is a guaranteed 40 hours a week no matter what, whilst part time is whatever you get given and can go up and down from week to week.) This meant the only real factor that made a difference in how much you got per paycheck was the hours you work, and that was pretty much based on how available you are and how reliable you are. Better workers are generally going to get more hours than those who don't really do a lot, and as such make more money, which is kinda like the US system except for that it's you get more money per hour rather than just more hours.

Now keep in mind, this is my experience solely within two jobs. I have no idea if shared wages is a common approach in England or if maybe just this one grocery chain does it, nor do I know if anywhere in the US does it (my guess would be no). But I've always found it an interesting difference where I can never fully decide which way I like more because they're in as many ways different as they are similar, so I'm curious what everyone else thinks of the two, especially since I doubt anyone except for myself and @Mr EliteL have even experienced a shared wage environment.

Therefore, we are requiring everyone to verify that their age is greater than 3+ years. I don't ever buy anything from the PS Store usually, but I can't see how this test doesn't end up with Sony getting a lawsuit filed against them. Imagine buying something from the PS Store and finding out later you paid more than someone else because you were placed into this A/B test with zero consent or knowledge? This whole thing is straight up bullshit and I'm surprised I hadn't heard anything about it until now.

Following the recent leadership changes at Xbox, it was revealed that the next generation Xbox was in development, dubbed as Project Helix. Today at GDC, the company provided further details on Project Helix:

Designed to play your Xbox console and PC games, delivering leading performance and ushering in the next generation of console gaming.

Powered by a custom AMD SoC and co-designed for the next generation of DirectX and FSR to unlock what comes next.

Plan to ship alpha versions of the hardware to developers beginning in 2027.

Starting in April, Xbox mode will begin rolling out to Windows in select markets. It brings a familiar Xbox experience to players while keeping the flexibility and openness of Windows.
I'm glad to see Xbox is staying in the console scene, for reasons I've shared before of just preventing other companies like PlayStation from doing anything they want to through providing competition. Not surprised to see they're going for a console/PC hybrid since it makes sense for them to go for that niche, which might benefit them over just trying to do a pure console because that side of the market is pretty much locked in to PlayStation and Nintendo.

What they definitely need to do though is no X/S variants of the thing. Especially with their requirement that games must have parity on Series X and Series S, which is just knee-capping games from being as good as they could be on Series X.

According to anonymous sources familiar with the company's plans, Sony no longer plans to release their big single player titles onto PC; those games will revert to being PS5 exclusive, while online-focused titles such as Marathon and Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls will remain multi-platform releases. Apparently, plans for Ghost of Yotei and other internally developed games to have PC releases were recently scrapped. It's speculated that the shift in strategy may be due to recent PlayStation games not selling well on PC, as well as concerns that releasing games on PC risks damaging the console's brand and hurting PlayStation 5 sales numbers.

An exclusive report from IGN has revealed sudden and notable changes to the leadership at Xbox that will see current Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer retiring, Xbox President Sarah Bond resigning, Matt Booty promoted to Chief Content Officer, and current President of Microsoft's CoreAI product Asha Sharma taking over as the new CEO of Microsoft Gaming. The changes will come into effect as soon as Monday, February 23, which will be when Spencer's retirement becomes effective and see Asha Sharma take over his role:

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella Wrote:
I want to thank Phil for his extraordinary leadership and partnership. Over 38 years at Microsoft, including 12 years leading Gaming, Phil helped transform what we do and how we do it.

Phil Spencer Wrote:
Last fall, I shared with Satya that I was thinking about stepping back and starting the next chapter of my life. From that moment, we aligned on approaching this transition with intention, ensuring stability, and strengthening the foundation we’ve built. Xbox has always been more than a business. It’s a vibrant community of players, creators, and teams who care deeply about what we build and how we build it. And it deserves a thoughtful, deliberate plan for the road ahead.

Today marks an exciting new chapter for Microsoft Gaming as Asha Sharma steps into the role of CEO, and I want to be the first to welcome her to this incredible team. Working with her over the past several months has given me tremendous confidence. She brings genuine curiosity, clarity and a deep commitment to understanding players, creators, and the decisions that shape our future. We know this is an important moment for our fans, partners, and team, and we’re committed to getting it right. I’ll remain in an advisory role through the summer to support a smooth handoff.

Asha Sharma Wrote:
My first job is simple: understand what makes this work and protect it. That starts with three commitments. First, great games. Everything begins here. We must have great games beloved by players before we do anything. Unforgettable characters, stories that make us feel, innovative game play, and creative excellence. We will empower our studios, invest in iconic franchises, and back bold new ideas. We will take risks. We will enter new categories and markets where we can add real value, grounded in what players care about most. I promoted Matt Booty in honor of this commitment. He understands the craft and the challenges of building great games, has led teams that deliver award-winning work, and has earned the trust of game developers across the industry.

Second, the return of Xbox. We will recommit to our core Xbox fans and players, those who have invested with us for the past 25 years, and to the developers who build the expansive universes and experiences that are embraced by players across the world. We will celebrate our roots with a renewed commitment to Xbox starting with console which has shaped who we are. It connects us to the players and fans who invest in Xbox, and to the developers who build ambitious experiences for it.

Gaming now lives across devices, not within the limits of any single piece of hardware. As we expand across PC, mobile, and cloud, Xbox should feel seamless, instant, and worthy of the communities we serve. We will break down barriers so developers can build once and reach players everywhere without compromise.

Third, future of play. We are witnessing the reinvention of play. To meet the moment, we will invent new business models and new ways to play by leaning into what we already have: iconic teams, characters, and worlds that people love. But we will not treat those worlds as static IP to milk and monetize. We will build a shared platform and tools that empower developers and players to create and share their own stories.

As monetization and AI evolve and influence this future, we will not chase short-term efficiency or flood our ecosystem with soulless AI slop. Games are and always will be art, crafted by humans, and created with the most innovative technology provided by us.

Matt Booty Wrote:
Looking forward, I’m excited to partner with Asha as our next CEO. Our first conversations centered on her commitment to making great games and the role that plays in our overall success. She asks questions, pushes for clarity, and wants our choices grounded in player and developer needs. That mindset matters as the industry around us is changing quickly: how players engage, how games are made, and how business models and platforms evolve.

We have good reasons to believe in what’s ahead. This organization and its franchises have navigated change for decades, and our strength comes from teams who know how to adapt and keep delivering. That confidence is grounded in a strong pipeline of established franchises, new bets we believe in, and clear player demand for what we are building.

No statement was given from Sarah Bond, who may have resigned after not being Spencer's successor, despite many both inside and outside of Microsoft long believing she would be.

Honestly I'm actually glad to see Phil Spencer retiring. He seems like a nice guy but for a long while now I feel like he's just really been coasting and doing nothing to strengthen the Xbox brand, particularly after that massive acquisition of Activision Blizzard which did absolutely nothing except paint a huge target on Xbox's back that attracted a ton of attention from Microsoft. Spending that much money and as far as I know not making it back yet is just asking to have your parent company watch you like a hawk when before you were a side project to them they didn't need to be overly concerned about and were content to let it do what it was doing prior to that acquisition.

I can't say I trust Sharma's statement in regards to AI, but ultimately all I'm hoping for is that Xbox as a brand (especially as a console brand) continues in the wake of this change because otherwise Sony is just going to end up in a position where there is absolutely zero competition for them in the console market. I know in terms of sales Xbox isn't touching PlayStation at the moment, but I remember how cocky and arrogant Sony were with the PS3 and the only thing that allowed them to be humbled was Xbox, and ironically the roles immediately switched at the start of the following console generation when Xbox was humbled back in turn with the Xbox One announcement. Without Xbox there is no way the PS4 would have turned out the way it did, and if Xbox were in a stronger position for this console generation it might have made Sony give the PS5 reasons to actually be worth a damn.

I... I don't even know what to say to this news. PlayStation has done a lot of dumb, head-scratching moves before, but this might be the biggest one yet. How do you acquire a company that is really good at their niche (making really good remakes) and then completely destroy them? Like, excuse my language for a second, but PlayStation, what the absolute FUCK?!?!

They make an amazing remake of Demon's Souls, leading you to acquire them, and instead of letting them make more amazing remakes of your games, LIKE BLOODBORNE, you instead doom them to making a live-service God of War game. Which ends up being cancelled like every other live service game you've tried and horribly failed to make, leaving them abandoned to take the brunt of the consequences of that cancellation, and then let them flounder for a year trying to get ideas pitched for projects, only to give them the biggest middle finger of all and shut them down?

Nope, couldn't just let them go back to doing what they were REALLY GOOD AT DOING. You had to punish them for failing to give you the money printing live service game that you've wasted billions of dollars trying to make over so many years, and now a really good game studio is gone because of the absolute incompetence running this shit show of a company.

Honestly at this point Sony (Japan) needs to bring PlayStation HQ back to Japan, because it's been nothing but an absolute dumpster fire since they let the California branch have control over PlayStation. As a PlayStation fan, this move really pisses me off and at this point I wouldn't care if PlayStation crashed and burned. Microsoft/Xbox has always been (deservedly so) clowned on for acquiring studios and then sucking the life out of them and killing them. Apparently PlayStation saw that and was like, "we can do that better than they can!"

I'm mad. That quote from the PlayStation spokesperson makes me really mad. "We thank them for everything they've done for us, except for make us the next Fortnite, so they can go f**k themselves actually." There's been a lot of studio shut downs the past year or two and most of them have been absolutely deserved, but Bluepoint was one of the few that didn't deserve this. They were set up for failure and they were absolutely screwed by Jim Ryan's stupid obsession with making the next mega money milking live-service game.

I can't wait for PlayStation to acquire Fromsoft at this point and then shut them down when they don't deliver Fortnite Souls (PlayStation probably thinks they could just take Nightreign, make another one, but this time lock all content behind paywalls).
