So, this theory was actually put forth by Ross Scott on his YT game-reviewing channel "Ross's Game Dungeon", and I'll more-or-less write it down as it is, but adding my own spin to it, because I think it is just too great not to be expanded upon.
Basically what he says is that letting Nathan kill Chloe at the start of the game is the best move Max could have possibly taken... because, while losing Chloe would suck, that would send shock waves, change the way Arcadia Bay is run for years and resolve more than a few character arcs right from the get-go.
Because Nathan is very wealthy and his dad is a super influential man, with people willing to overlook pretty much anything he or his relatives do (including bringing a gun to school) so getting convicted thru traditional methods would just be impossibly hard to do. But when Nathan assaults Chloe, he does it with the aforementioned gun and on the women's bathroom, which will make him look like the intruder, and immediately paint him as someone who went out of his way to do the killing. That is super important, because in any other scenario, the legion of lawyers his father would have no doubt gotten to defend him, would have tried to pin the whole thing on an aggression by Chloe, maybe even blaming it off entirely on her track record and reputation.
And let's not forget that Max would be a witness on all of this. That, combined with all of the above, should be impossible to defend against, no matter how renown a lawyer or firm you have got on your side.
If Nathan is convicted (and he really should), that would take his family's name and prestige down with him. The whole face and destiny of Arcadia Bay would be changed as a result of not getting in the way of Nathan's attack.
Pretty wild, huh?
Please don't hesitate to add your own spins to it -as well as comments-. The more, the merrier!

My reasoning for letting Chloe sacrifice herself to save Arcadia Bay was because to me it seemed like no matter what the universe wanted her dead. We stop her dad from dying and they get into an accident that leaves her in a point where she is barely alive, but kind of trapped in her body. She literally asks Max to help her commit suicide in this future to save her parents the bills.
In the normal game continuum her living past Nathan shooting her dead results in an un-natural super storm to come to Arcadia Bay to literally finish her off. Now I'm not sure how that turns out until the comics come out. Maybe if Max did more things maybe she could of gotten in ending where Chloe and Arcadia Bay survive.
Now for the theory that this could be used to take down the Prescott name? I honestly don't think it would of Nathan would have been charged because his dad is a sociopath and he is unstable as shit! The kid really needs some serious mental help. Just in the long run I don't think it would have been enough to take down his dad. He could easily throw his son under the bus and he'd probably feel no remorse because how dare he tarnish his family name!
Thinking about this whole thing I really need to replay the first one and just take it all in. I finished the second one a little while ago, but I think I need a refresher on the first game.

I choose to save her cause it came off to me that's all I did in the game. Chloe ends up getting shot by Nathan & Max decides to save her. Chloe almost gets run over by a train, time to save her again. My thought process is that if I have to be made to save her dumb unappreciative butt so often I might as well go in for the long haul, Arcadia bay be d4mned!
Besides, Nathan Prescot ends up DEAD at the end of LiS anyway because teach kills his dumb a$$ anyway. What's the point of even trying to bring down the Prescot name when Nathan ends up dead at the end of everything anyway. In my play through I ended up saving Katie, who I felt badly for. Though Nathan isn't the only dead student, cause spoiler alert Amber's been dead since the time you get control of Max. Later on Victoria Chase is taken, same as Max & she ends up dead: same as Nathan. The only one to survive through teach's psycotic episodes of taking pics of them is Max.
I think that Chloe can be saved & why should it matter if Arcadia Bay is taken out? It's like Chloe says; that place is a hell hole. The way the story goes in game is that the Prescots have over fished the waters there, & all of the cops are bought out by the Prescot family anyway. My take is to let the tornado take it out & let the god deer spirit short out the rest.

That's precisely what I hate the most about Chloe as a character... all she ever does for you is getting into insane trouble you had to rescue both of you from. And when that's not the case, she's just an annoyance to be around of... I'm not really sure what the thought process was when it came to writing her, but I was not only not endeared towards her, I couldn't even stand her at moments.
Letting her die, for me, was more of a temptation than a punishment. Besides, the café scene with all the characters as still sitting around with past dialogue really guilt-trips you into not being such a selfish arse (which I approve a lot of)*.
*Not saying you or anyone else who decided against saving Arcadia Bay was - just a neat touch they put in it
But yeah, it's really a matter of picking your own poison in the end, with such a crappy town in one end of the scale and the most hella annoying character in the game in the other.
Gosh, I love that game xD
