My mom loves to do that too. Hell she doesn't seem to believe in regular maintenance of a car or getting one's oil changed.
Example: When I got my Wrangler about 10 years ago now, before it was bought we had it looked at my a guy we knew who was a mechanic and a Wrangler fan. Said some needs to be replaced soon as it was factory original (Jeep is a 2000 year model) never got them replaced then one day a year or two later I ended up stuck in middle of traffic because my spark plugs gave out on a wet and damp day (was stopped because of a train and the train was being a bastard going back and forth for some reason...no idea why it was allowed to do so on a main/busy road as that one is).
