They just want to control how you consume games by making sure you're reliant on their services for your gaming needs. This isn't about consumer trends; it's about control. That's it. That's all there is to it. Fuck them. True, but I do wonder how sustainable that is if something bad like the 2011 PSN hack happens again.
As a side note, I just realized that there's a chance we don't really see physical collectors editions for games in a few years from now.

The funny thing is that it happened. Like two weeks ago PSN went down and people weren't able to play their games and it just gave so much traction to the "protests" of this digital-only future. Of course PlayStation isn't going to care, they made up their minds and they're going to do what they want to do regardless of who it upsets. It also doesn't help that they knew that tens of millions of people are going to buy GTAVI like the drones they are and it's going to massively boost PS5 sales numbers despite anything else.
I have been on a quest lately to look up any PS3 games I want to buy while prices are still decent. I'm assuming that once the store closes on PS3, that prices of physical PS3 games will probably inflate extremely badly, so might as well pick some of them up now while they're still $20-$30. Trying to stick to sealed copies of them, but unfortunately it looks like I may have to resort to buying used (gross) for some of them, since there's a $100-$200 between some games sealed compared to used.
