Done with porting the original game onto every platform they can, Capcom have moved on to remaking Resident Evil 4 from the ground up for PlayStation 5 and surely every other platform they can put it onto for the next decade.

Resident Evil 4 Remake will be released on March 24, 2023.

As discussion has the potential to branch into the original game, this thread can serve for talking about both this remake and any other versions of Resident Evil 4. Smile

Right now, I'm still wary of this. I'm sure visually it'll be amazing, but I worry if the remake can retain the spirit of the original in both its tone and gameplay. I really do not want this to play like the RE2 Remake, and I wonder if the campy nature of the original will work with this grittier and more realistic art style. If anything should be really changed, ditch the gun toting enemies in the last area. It feels so out of place to the rest of the game when a dude just shows up with a gatling gun.

It looks good and I honestly wonder if they are going to change the story and gameplay. If it make the story better and the game better I don't think that necessarily a bad thing we have access to the original pretty easily. Part of me kinda would want to co-op, but I think that going to have to wait until RE5 remake coming in 2025.

You know isn't it kinda weird that we got this for a remake before we even got Code Veronica?

They did announce that the remake will have a "reimagined" story, so I already know that's killed a lot of the hype for a few RE fans.

Gotta go the Square Enix route with this one.

It honestly might be good still, I don't remmeber the reimagined RE story being considered bad remakes? I honestly suspect they might add something or maybe change some dialogue here and there. XD

Probably a safer bet to remake this over CV. I think it didn't sell too hot at first and sizing up that or RE4 for a remake it isn't hard to see where the money lies. Although, this announcement did spark interest in a CV remake so maybe that'll come in time.

Having played RE2R, the story wasn't bad so much as the way it was told. The game has Leon A, Leon B, Claire A, and Claire B as routes, and it's honestly a mess compared to how alternate paths were done in RE4 with Leon and Ada. Enemies are also far too tanky in the remakes for my liking, where it can take 7+ shots to the head to kill a zombie. I get they're undead, but there would be no head left long before 7 bullets get put into it. Errm

As for the story being changed, I can see it since RE7 and RE8 tried to keep away from being too campy. I think this game will still feature some because RE7 had a boss fight that involved drifting a muscle car in a tiny garage and another with a chainsaw duel, so the goofiness is still there, but I doubt this remake will retain the level the original had. I hope that Krauser gets a backstory given in this game since it would suck if that is once again kept to whatever game it is in, which is definitely going to be missed by a lot of new players nowadays. Speaking of Krauser, the crazy QTE knife fight better stay in.

Have you played the original RE2 Moony? The idea of two separate paths was pretty neat for a game!

Crazy QTE knife fight I hope they keep that in knifes are always fun! and it means someone can do a knife only run of the remake!

I have not, and I like the idea of separate paths, but I dislike how RE2R handled it.

The knife will absolutely be in because it's in the remakes and RE7 and RE8.
I do hope that the Mercenaries in RE4R is made more like the mode in RE8. That is by far the best iteration of the mode and I don't want to see it regress for the sake of being authentic to the original RE4 Mercenaries.

Resident Evil 4 Remake - Developer Walkthrough
There's not a lot of new information from this walkthrough, but for the little that is shared we get to learn that the Ganado have been completely redesigned and see a small glimpse of gameplay (which is just Leon walking through the woods).

I guess it looks visually good, but I already expected that, so seeing nothing about how the game plays differently to the original is rather underwhelming for me. Judging by the tone the developers want to set though, I think the over the top camp of the original isn't coming over and I think Suplex City is going to be closed for business. Sad

Resident Evil 4 Remake | Village Gameplay Footage + Story Trailer
During today's Resident Evil Showcase, new gameplay footage and a story trailer were shown for Resident Evil 4 Remake, giving us a better look at its tone and approach.

The gameplay footage starts off with Leon exploring some unfamiliar buildings and coming across elements that were not present in the original game, such as the corpse of one of the police officers who escort him to the village, and a room with documents and photographs on the wall about Ashley Graham, the President's daughter. Afterwards, we return to a more familiar scene from the original game as Leon fights off hordes of infected villagers in the games iconic opening village fight scene, which shows off a new mechanic of using the knife to quickly stop an enemy grapple, at the expense of the knife's durability. This feature is similar to that seen in the RE2 Remake, except it seems this knife is significantly more versatile since Leon somehow manages to use it to block a deadly chainsaw attack. With that and the inclusion of Leon's roundhouse kick, it definitely looks like the campy elements of the original aren't going away.

Not shown in the video above but included in the showcase was footage of the Merchant, who now offers new trades for gems. In the original, gems and treasures were only good for money, but in the remake some of these will be directly tradeable for items. The merchant will also no longer be the only way to get more ammo (and presumably other items) if you're running low; the crafting system from RE7 and RE8 will be present in this game, likely to encourage more decision making over what items to make and to play more conservatively as opposed to the ammo-stuffed-pockets approach of the original game.

A new story trailer also gives us a better look at most of the iconic characters from RE4, as well as showing off a few scenes that are entirely new, such as Ashley showing more apparent signs of infection and even aiming a gun at another character unwillingly, presumably at Leon.

Resident Evil 4 Remake is still on track for its originally announced March 24, 2023 release date.

I actually really love what I saw today. It reminds me a lot of the upcoming Dead Space Remake, where it isn't drastically changing the original game but at the same time is changing enough to justify its existence and not feel like the same game with better visuals and some extra cutscenes. I have to say though, Ada's voice sounds a lot like Elena from the Uncharted series. XD

Seeing as I've never played the original Resident Evil 4, I'm excited to give the remake a try. I'll probably pick this up at some point.

If this game ends up having enough differences to the original like how the Dead Space Remake looks to be, I'd suggest considering playing the OG too since it wouldn't just be the exact same experience but older. The OG RE4 is currently 75% off on Steam which makes it only $5. It's also on sale on consoles if you're interested in those platforms instead. Wink

So it looks like that unlike the RE2 and RE3 remakes, the RE4 remake isn't going to have any notable areas cut from the game, per an interview with the development team in the latest issue of EDGE magazine:

EDGE Magazine (Interview Summary) Wrote:
The development team was split into three parts, with each one assigned to either the Village, Castle, or Island section of the game, which was then developed separately from the other teams and sections. After each team finished their assigned section of the game, they came back together to review the work collectively and determine if there was any need for revisions or alterations required for pacing.

Additionally, when talking about the Island section specifically the developers stated that there's now "a lot more to it" than what was seen in the original game, but no further clarification or details were given.
I didn't really expect the Island section to be cut from the game, since even though I think the tone of it feels out of place the story would never be able to end at the Castle. I just hope it dials back on the amount of guns and action-movie style shenanigans that go on and instead feels like a foreboding place that's heavily fortified because of the experiments taking place there, and not because dozens of Ganado's got handed guns and stun batons.

New Resident Evil 4 Remake Details
Resident Evil 4 Remake is this month's cover story for Game Informer, and therefore a lot of new details are going to be coming out over the course of this month due to that. Here is everything that has been shared by Capcom and Game Informer so far:
  • Several new enemies will be introduced.

  • QTE's are no longer present in cut scenes.
  • Knives are now breakable items and thus multiple can be carried now.
  • Stealth kills are possible with the knife, and this does not appear to affect durability of the weapon.
  • Executing an enemy on the ground with the knife will use durability.
  • Roundhouse kicks are still in.
  • New crossbow weapon.
  • Laser sight on weapons is now an upgrade.
  • The overall map seems to be largely the same as that of the original game, judging by this image.
  • Hiding spots for Ashley have been removed entirely, and she no longer has a health bar. If she is attacked too much she will go down and need to be revived, and will die if attacked while in the downed state.

A few hours ago, Game Informer uploaded gameplay footage from Chapter 5 of RE4R, which is the chapter right after Leon meets up with Ashley:

I only had a brief skim through the gameplay but it looks pretty faithful to the original game but with enough slight differences to feel distinct. It kinda reminds me of the Dead Space Remake and apparently RE4R will be a much more faithful remake overall compared to RE2R and RE3R, which I'm happy about because I don't really like those remakes. The new enemy looks cool too, and I think the village area definitely needed it because I think the only special enemy you ever see in those sections is the chainsaw guy, whilst the castle gets quite a few in comparison.
I'm curious if Ashley can be insta-killed by anything or not anymore though; if she can still die instantly to a chainsaw guy that'll be really bad in the night area where you fight two of them at once because in the original there was a dumpster you could put her in but that won't be there in the remake so she has to be constantly with you. I just hope friendly fire still results in an instant fail though if nothing else does, but I think if an attack can insta-kill the player then it should insta-kill her too.

This definitely looks promising to me now that all this new info has come out. I was wary it would change too much and lose any of the feel of the original or worse end up like RE2R.

SUPLEX CITY IS OPEN FOR BUSINESS! Wow Wow
Seriously I am so happy to see that the suplex is staying in the game. I was worried it would get removed due to the tonal change of this remake, although this trailer as a whole presents a pretty solid case that the camp isn't going away.

Interesting to see Luis get a way bigger role by being present in a lot of gameplay segments that were normally solo affairs. I was actually getting suspicious that the trailer was going to announce a co-op mode due to the focus on Leon/Luis gameplay.

Krauser's fight no longer being a QTE cutscene and instead an actual gameplay fight will be interesting, especially if it does restrict that fight to knives only. If that is what it does then I don't mind that change too much.

Very excited to see a demo announcement. I will definitely play it the second it drops. Grin
