With the year coming to a close and a lot of outlets putting out their Game of the Year lists (plus The Game Awards airing tonight), I guess it's a suitable time to make this megathread to serve for talking about any of the following:
  • Your personal favourite games of 2023.
  • Any game of the year lists/winners from whatever outlets do them.
  • Anything else reflecting on this year in gaming in general, whether it be how the overall year was, a particular thing that happened, etc. I figure since the first two points are reflections of the year overall that this point can be included here rather than making a separate thread for it.

I'll try to use this first post as a general collection of notable things for easy searching, such as links to various GotY lists and whatnot.

Award Winners
Anything in this list is a game that was listed as the top game within some form of GotY list, whether it be overall or within a particular category. Each game will have its awards won listed beneath it along with the awarding party as a quick way to see what outlets awarded what game what awards. Games will be listed in alphabetical order for now:

What a complete waste of three hours. The only thing in this show that was even worth the time was the announcement of a brand new non-mobile Mana game. Rise of the Ronin looked cool, but I need to see a lot more before I can give it the "not a waste of time" seal of approval.

Lies of P got robbed.

I knew BG3 would take home a bunch of awards. Boring and bland is Western media's bread and butter.

Boo at mostly boredom. Nah I'm just fine with it as I got to miss it live and slept instead. Also boo for nothing from Tekken 8, guess Harada was there just in case T8 won Most Anticipated but fat chance as it was up against Rebirth. As I played Trials of Mana on Switch I'm slightly interested in the new Mana game, but that's about it for the announcements for me personally.

Overall I think TGA was okay, but taking time to reflect on it it had some glaring issues in terms of presentation:
  • Every award presenter had more time on stage to talk than the actual winner had. Almost no one who went on stage to receive an award got longer than 30 seconds and were getting a "Wrap It Up" prompt on the teleprompter before 30s would even hit, and is why music would be heard playing while someone was still trying to talk or why speeches would wrap things up in an abrupt way.
  • Yet again Geoff has to jerk off Kojima and dedicate far too much time to a project he's cooking up where we learn and see nothing. That time should have been given to award winners so they can actually get a decent amount of time to say their piece.
  • I know awards are like a footnote for this show, but there were a few times where the show would make a particular thing seem really important, i.e. Geoff emphasizing how important indie devs are to the industry, only for an award related to that thing be given in a rapid fire segment of multiple category winners. I'd rather the rapid fire stuff only be done for categories where the winner has already won an earlier category and so they don't need to bother with a speech or necessarily drawing that winner announcement out because at least then it makes some sense for spending less time on repeat winner awards and giving that time to other things in the show that matter (not Kojima).
I think the cutting people short on stage was the most egregious thing of the whole show, and it's something a ton of people noticed and have been talking about before the show even ended. Geoff then thought this would be a good idea of a tweet to post:
It was going well in the first half until he threw out the claim no one was cutoff when evidence exists showing the opposite. Maybe the music being played so soon was toned down as the show progressed but the teleprompter was still telling people to wrap it up at the 30s mark.

Interestingly I saw this breakdown of how much time was spent on each part of TGA, and it's a pretty shit picture:

Total Cumulative Times for TGA 2023
  • Winner’s speeches: 10 min
  • Musical numbers: 13.5 min
  • Award presenters: 26.5 min
  • Other presenters: 42.5 min
  • Trailers/ads: 1 hr 28 min
Source: https://vxtwitter.com/_HayleyElise/statu...9421809918

Trailers being so high is whatever, it's a given they'll take up considerably more time just because of how long the average trailer is even if the number of trailers was halved. "Other presenters" is classified as anyone who was speaking on stage to promote something (usually seen before/after a game trailer), which I can't believe is as high as it is seeing the number because the award presenters taking a lot of time was more noticeable to me.

Show aside, I liked a good number of the games shown, even if some were just cinematics which I dislike but I liked the concept being pitched to be interested to keep an eye out for gameplay footage down the road:
  • Windblown
  • Dave the Diver: Dredge
  • World of Goo 2
  • God of War Ragnarok: Valhalla
  • Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown
  • Kemuri
  • All of those Sega remakes was sick just from how unexpected that was to see so many old IP getting new life
  • Jurassic Park: Survival
  • Tales of Kenzera: ZAU
  • The First Berserker: Khazan
  • Marvel's Blade

Yeah, this was something that annoyed me as well. Like bro, there are kids watching this show, you can't just get on your knees and start sucking off your butt buddy right in the middle of the stage. Of all of the game developers in the world to be creepily obsessed with, why one of the most absurdly overrated ones?

I agree about time management. Way too much time is given to celebs that don't even matter to the gaming world. Like whoever the hell that dude was that got to announced the winner of Game of the Year. Literal who?

Might as well just given a 30 minute slot for Todd Howard to go up on stage and tell everybody why they're wrong about Starflop and why it's actually a really great game and people are just playing it wrong (aka what Bethesda was doing in replies to Steam reviews KEKW).

I don't find Kojima overrated myself (I think the way people like Geoff Keighley act around him is what actually hurts his reputation the most) but it wouldn't matter to me who it was up on that stage. No one should be getting that much time on stage at The Game Awards to advertise a game regardless of what state that game is in. Geoff has Summer Game Fest, put that stuff there and not here where award winners should be the ones getting the most time to talk on stage.

Celebrities being used to present awards who have no ties to gaming continues to baffle me too. I doubt these celebrities are paying to be there, and gaming doesn't need them to appear "legit" when it's such a massive medium now. I'd get it if this was the 90's or early 2000's when gaming wasn't seen the way it is now but not in 2023. If I could remember or be bothered to look it up I'd compare how many celebrities showed up to Summer Game Fest this year but I'm sure I wouldn't be incorrect to guess it probably isn't even half as many as what show up to The Game Awards every year. Eh

Google Unveils the Top 10 Searched Games in 2023
I don't know if they do this every year since I've never heard of this until today, but Google have unveiled the top 10 searched games for 2023 (along with other top searches): https://trends.google.com/trends/yis/202.../?hl=en-US

Global

  4. Battlegrounds Mobile India
  5. Starfield

I was surprised previously to find out that Harry Potter is extremely popular in Asia (found this out when I saw an article talking about how well Hogwarts Legacy was selling in Japan), so knowing that now, I'm not surprised it managed to be the #2 thing looked up in Japan after funny fruit game.

Seeing it #1 in USA and Global just makes me laugh because of all the cancel campaigns and harassment that people who didn't want the game to succeed just made people look into the game more and more and caused more people to buy it. Even the watered down Switch version has been selling like hotcakes (became the #3 best selling Switch game in like two or three days after releasing). I really look forward to seeing what the updated sales figures will be for the game if they end up releasing any for the Switch version.

Though it does make it more of a shame that Keighley and TGA didn't have the balls to include it for any awards. I knew they wouldn't, but had some slight hope that they might actually care more about celebrating all games and not letting the fear of Twitter omitted slur* decide what games get included. Definitely should have been in there for best music at the very least, as the game has a very lovely soundtrack.

*Moderator note: please refrain from using ableist slurs, thank you.

So the 2023 wrap-ups for PlayStation are live now, here's my stats according to it:

Interesting fact: I actually got 9 Platinum Trophies this year, with one of them being Salt & Sanctuary on the Vita. Looks like the wrap-ups don't take those into consideration any more despite it being visible on my trophy list. It might have been this way last year too, but I don't think I got any Vita Platinums in 2022... wonder if PS3 games are also ignored for this now.

Comments I saw about Hogwarts Legacy not being included mostly shared the sentiment that from a gameplay perspective it wasn't strong enough to get a nomination on that front (apparently it just gets rather repetitive with the puzzle and mission design?) but was strong enough to get into things like Art Direction, which even I would agree with. The game has a lot of areas in it that have never been visually represented in any Harry Potter media before and it did a very good job at bringing those spaces to life.

The puzzles definitely did get repetitive, which was one of my biggest criticisms of the game, though I couldn't hold it against the game too much because every Western open-world game is a gigantic pot of repetitiveness. Even the almighty Skyrim is just a world filled with the same caves with the same enemies and the same puzzles. It was something I heavily criticized in HL, it's something I've heavily criticized in Skyrim, Elden Ring, Ghost of Tsushima -- every open world game. It's something I will continue to heavily criticize until the day a developer decides they're going to make an open world game with actual variety in it and very little recycling. It's one of the reason why I greatly dislike Open World games for the most part. It's the reason why despite Elden Ring having really good combat mechanics, it'll never reach the levels of Bloodborne, Dark Souls or Demon's Souls to me -- because the world is just too empty and boring to explore 90% of the time. Where was the worlds of those three games are extremely interesting with some really amazing level design that just leave you wanting more.

If they make a Hogwarts Legacy 2, I really hope they take some time to put a lot of variety into it. With the HP world and all the different spells, there are endless puzzles they could come up with that could bring a lot of fun and enjoyment to fully exploring the entire game world. They just need to be willing to actually put that kind of effort into the game.

As for the PlayStation wrap-up, I previously posted mine in the General Game Chat topic if anyone is interested in seeing it.

It did give me a code to redeem but for whatever reason it claims the code isn't valid.
May and June being super low in hours logged is absolutely because Tears of the Kingdom came out and I spent all my time on my Switch during those months.
December will likely be Lies of P again but I do plan to play the new God of War Ragnarök DLC that just dropped so that might actually overtake whatever my hours are in Lies of P for this month to become my top game for this month.

Mine's going to be terribly boring because I don't think I touched another game unless it decides to count the Tekken 8 CNT/CBT but I barely touched the CBT. Ah, it doesn't but apparently I did play some of T7.

Games Played: 2
First Game: Genshin Impact

1. Genshin Impact (733 hours played, 14 trophies earned, 99% or rather 99.86% ratio currently)
2. Tekken 7 (1 hour played, 0 trophies, 1% ratio, or rather 0.14%)

Game Style: Thrill Seeker - spent 99% of my time on the edge of my seat! (sure...)
Favourite DualSense: White (well dang my poor Red one got overtaken, but why do I need to know this?)
Social Style: Lone Wolf

Wow, I played a lot of a single game this year!

Quick, I shall try and load the rest of my December with some other games to get in on the final month! (not...?)
